About sam
Sam D'Cruze is a multidisciplinary and socially engaged artist whose practice explores the harmony between textiles and painting, often using text, abstract embroidery, and layered materials to investigate themes of memory, resilience, and identity. Through both her solo practice and community engagement, D'Cruze creates poetic, tactile works that honour lived experience and shared vulnerability.
Formerly owner of luxury design brand Darkest Star, D'Cruze's early work explored the intersection of sensuality and empowerment through finely crafted textile pieces, honing a sensitivity to the body and craftsmanship that continues to inform her approach to materials.
Her socially active work is rooted in a deeply personal commitment to opening up conversations around addiction and recovery following the death of her alcohol-dependent father in 2015, and in 2022, she founded Child Of Project C.I.C., a community interest company working across London, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire. The project uses art-making as a tool for recovery, supporting adults in rehabilitation, people experiencing homelessness, and neurodiverse students through mentorship, workshops, and public exhibitions.
D'Cruze's work embodies a belief in the transformative power of creativity—cultivating inclusive, multivocal spaces where art becomes a vehicle for healing and connection. She is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, with a Master of Research in Fine Art and Humanities.
